Journal #2 Reflections about teaching

Regarding Unit #2 I am going to reflect about teaching. Since the beginning of the semester I realized that English Classes had changed in terms of methodological procedures. Classes are planned and organized with clear steps : Pre, While and Post,  each step with its timing and because of this we had more favorable spaces to reflect upon the topics. Moreover the Learning objectives were clear enough and I get involved with the topics once I read them.

During Unit #2 teachers maintained the space to discuss and reflect and the group works as well. Presentations and discussions were crucial to build up knowledge. I feel strongly that cooperative learning makes huge changes in terms of internalize a meaningful learning. In spite of the risk of working with others I witness the positive effects for the majority of the class thereby, undoubtedly, I am going to use and adapt some activities in my classes at school.

On the other hand I realized that Phonetics was included in our Friday´s classes. The core of seen language as a construction implies the integration of multiple topics and skills. Some people my disagree with me, but I think those classes were useful and support our English learning process.

Besides classes included the use of Videos, Power Points and short presentations with discussions.. All those materials plus teachers practices contribute to fulfill with the objectives. I really like the way you deal with the units , with the classes and with the assessments, all of them facilitated my learning process and helped me to identify in a deeper way my strengths and weaknesses.

Journal #1 :Reflections about teaching

This is my first reflective entry about Unit 1. I am going to talk about Methodological and Pedagogical aspects.  In regarding with teaching I have observed that classes are student´s center.  This type of class give students the opportunity to express themselves and being involved with the topic in order to achieve the goals and obtain as a result meaningful activities.

In this term I have realized that there are new strategies in terms of methodological procedures. First of all, I have seen that classes are planned in a clear way. I identified the three stages: Pre, While and Post.  Frankly I believed that this new method has had positive effects in our classes.  We are more organized in terms of timing and as a result we had optimal spaces of reflection. Moreover at the beginning of every class was easy for me to identify clearly the class objective. Personally this aspect engages me with the class and the topic.

On the other hand I really appreciate the space to speak and reflect given by teachers. Language is a construction and a constant development of skills.  So the class itself provides the necessary tools to improve different skills, such as speaking (mainly), reading and listening.  The connection between the readings and the objective of the class create a proper point to reflect and give opinions. At the same time videos help to develop listening skills and they are related with the topic, too.  Furthermore, What I liked the most, it was the group work in every class and in the task. Sometimes it is easy for me to recognize my own mistakes and other’s mistakes, too. In classes we discussed about key concepts, main ideas, different points of view, etc. Collaborative work and collaborative learning it is a powerful tool to take apart hindrance in our process.

Another aspect that is remarkable for me is the fact that I expanded my vocabulary. I believed that now I have more academic vocabulary than at the beginning of the term. Reading is a key element here. Through texts you can open a huge variety of new elements. I really think that include readings in class allow teachers take advantage of the new vocabulary, new concepts or new ideas of something.

All of the processes mentioned above facilitate my language learning process and I am pretty sure that I am going to apply them on my classes at school.  Additionally I would like to render thanks for this opportunity to reflect not only on what we learnt in terms of content but also on what we observed and experienced in the classroom in terms of teaching (Methodological and Pedagogical aspects).

Sustainable Development

According to Kity Van der Heijden, Sustainable Development is based on the “three E’s”. They are: economy, ecology and equity. To begin with, we are going to explain those 3 concepts. The first one, Economy is related to the monetary system around the world, which regulates people’s consumerism. Regarding this concept to what the author says, people should make use of just the necessary resources for living and for not being greedy. The problem here is that there are a lot of industries of non-renewable which possess a lot of money. Therefore, society is not working through equity, since it deals with the use of resources equally.

My reflection about my process of Student-Teacher

Nowadays, in terms of Education, we are facing a world that demands us more work in challenging situations. In the past Education was not as criticized as now. Educational system and students need our commitment, as future teachers, to develop new and better methods to teach them. Methods that encompass integral  and mixed lessons, where students could develop their personal abilities and take advantage of them.

At school it is possible to realize the importance of some factors that determine if the aim of a class is fulfilled or not. Some of the factors are motivation, classroom management, integrated lessons and mixed ability class. I would like to emphasize two points; motivation and mixed ability. In order to make sure that our students are going to apply all their potential we have to recognize that everyone has an especial talent that should be exploited in classes.  In this manner students will be engaged with the learning process and they will be willing to work in a cooperative way.

There are many ways in which we can foster inclusion in classes. Furthermore a lot of researchers support the idea of cooperative teaching ; which means the creation of an heterogeneous class  where students with high levels can help the struggling ones. By this way we are covering their learning needs and it is a benefit in the learning process of the entire class.

In my experience at SIAO School, fortunately I am working with a teacher that believes in the inclusion and equality and if it were necessary she would praise and/or modify some methods. In some tasks, the way she organizes the course lets me know that incorporating abilities from different students outcome in a significant work . When they help each other in what they are good at they feel confident and get involve in the process, not because they will receive a reward, is because they want to learn.

Probably, with the experience we are going to develop and improve the way we integrate the abilities of everyone. But we never have to forget the following phrase: “We get what we expect from others”, so if we want to take out the potential of our students we should expect that they are going to do their best. Sometimes parents, students and teachers blame each other with the responsibility of motivation, grades, behavior, etc. But thus process involves the participation and commitment of all of them. We, as future teachers can do a significant difference in our students, we have the space and our will. We just need to take this opportunity.
